Why Being Present Matters
I’m not a soccer guy. I usually prefer baseball or basketball. But last weekend, I played futsal with my brother Jack in the middle of a blazing summer afternoon. ⚽☀️
We split into teams, and I ended up playing with people I had never met before. Somehow, we found a rhythm. We talked, passed, adapted. It was more fun than I expected.
It reminded me of something essential for public speaking: your focus shouldn’t be inward—it should be on the people, the room, and the moment. When you’re fully present, you can read the room, respond in real time, and stop overthinking.
3 Simple Steps to Get Out of Your Head
Here are three practical things I do to shift my focus before speaking, and why they matter:
-
Stretch or shake out your body
Why it matters: Loosens tension, activates energy, and signals to your mind that it’s time to engage with the space around you. -
Take a short walk
Why it matters: Moves your attention outward, not inward, helping you notice the people and the room rather than your nerves. -
Breathe deeply
Why it matters: Calms your mind, centers your focus, and primes your voice for clarity and confidence.
Even a few minutes can dramatically change how present and connected you feel when speaking.
Real Impact: Stories from the Field
I’ve coached many students and entrepreneurs who struggle with overthinking on stage. One client told me after trying these movement techniques:
“I didn’t realize how much I was trapped in my own head until I actually moved and breathed before presenting. Suddenly, I felt like I could read the room and speak naturally.”
Experiencing this firsthand on the futsal court reminded me: movement isn’t just for the body—it’s a gateway to presence and confident communication.
